Intern, Health Care Improvement, Summer - Specific duties will vary with assignment. Assessment Scientist. As a business statistics student, I'v read so many different kinds of introductory statistics books. Andy's book, is definitely the best one, and way better than the 2nd best one. This book is thorough, clear, and well structured. You don't need a sound mathematical knowledge to understand the contents in this book, like other books always did. View 1 comment. May 01, Tim Ingham rated it really liked it Shelves: methods. You can't exactly like a statistics text but this is as close as it gets.

It covers pretty much everything a social scientist is going to need to know in detail but at the same time provides an easy walkthrough of the standard techniques using spss examples. It is as readable as a statistics text is ever going to be. Aug 07, Alexandra rated it did not like it. If tabloid magazines published textbooks, I imagine they would be akin to this textbook.

Field's 'jokes' and babble detract from the main points, I wanted to throw this book out of window. Anyone who is mathematically adept, would do best to avoid reading this, lest you chew all your nails off. Jul 12, Wahyu rated it it was amazing. Feeling stuck doing statistical analysis? Then just ask Andy! It's very easy to read, bunch of humor, and user friendly. You wouldn't realize that you already learning statistics. The best shortcut to understand statistics. This should be the standard text for every statistics course.

Andy Field takes a difficult and constantly misunderstood subject and explains it in a way that not only demystifies but actually entertains. No really. Come back, I'm not mad. Thus far, I'm enjoying it as much as one can enjoy a statistics text Jul 16, Sainted Aunt added it. Just confirms how much I loathe statistics. I appreciate Prof. Field's sense of humour but the sequencing of examples and activities is appalling. Oct 24, Rob rated it really liked it Shelves: non-fiction. Amusingly mad autobiography coupled with lucid explanations of statistics and the use of SPSS for them.

Andy is probably a hero to many psychology undergraduates. Dec 15, Mel rated it it was amazing. I am really happy that I found this book. I had been dreading statistics for a while also, I tried to get to grips with statistics with other introductory books on basic concepts and I am really glad that there are still academics out there that know how to teach :- The fact that Andy Field's example studies and exercises made me laugh out loud in my university's library made me want to write a review immediately.

I also want to highlight that Field repeats the most important aspects I am really happy that I found this book. I also want to highlight that Field repeats the most important aspects throughout the book again and again. I am not complaining, though. In fact, it helps to really get the concepts and after you have read the entire book, you feel confident about starting your own research study. Nice references, but too many and too quaint ones: I don't want to be thinking of zombies or sperm when I'm trying to explain correlation for my exams. Which, thanks to Field, I will be.

On the other side; every book on the curriculum should have ample references to Maiden songs. Jul 17, jade rated it really liked it Shelves: academic-psychology. It perfectly links explanations on mathematical statistics to step-by-step instructions for running the corresponding data analyses in SPSS, and is very thorough and clear in this.

Andy Field gives useful details on absolutely anything and everything, making it a wonderful book for beginners, and throws in a huge dose of humour, too. Which is no surprise, of course, if you take in account that Field has written this book especially for those social sciences students who abhor statistics. The CD that goes with this book is also amazingly useful, containing syntax codes and data sample exercises. This is, however, not present in every chapter of the book and nicely countered by the presence and content of the CD.

This book is thorough, clear, and, yes, funny. Step-by-step instructions on which keys to press and detailed instructions on their functions make this one a must-have for every beginner in both the subject statistics and the program SPSS. The Beer Goggles and Lighting Effect, a study on the effects of alcohol consumption and dim lighting on the ratings of the attractiveness of members of the opposite sex Aug 08, Dana rated it it was amazing.

The fourth edition is awesome--moderated mediation chapter is added Preacher and Hayes. And, a whole chapter on diagnostics and data cleaning. Andy Field's style goes against my deeply held beliefs around anti-intellectualism and pandering to the lowest common denominator. He is extremely crass with his anecdotes throughout the book. But, this is the best text out there for teaching stats. The students remember concepts because he explains them so grossly.

It's not the first time I've had to The fourth edition is awesome--moderated mediation chapter is added Preacher and Hayes.
